Dream Theater is a good gateway drug if your really new to metal.
For me it was the mainstream slipknot songs back in 6th grade. Slipknot - Duality.

Yeah, I was there for Slipknot too. First time I heard Wait and Bleed was on 101 KUFO

Disturbed, Pantera, Metallica, Slipknot, Hellyeah, Tool, and Iron Maiden were some of my first.
Dream Theater didn't come till later, that's when I got into progressive and groove (DD, LoG)

However, Disturbed is still my favorite band.
In order to like DT you're really gonna have to appreciate instrumental talent. lol

Have you ever listened to Rebel Meets Rebel or Down? Knowing that you like Pantera/Hellyeah, you'll probably like both of those bands.

I recommend "Nothing to Lose" by Rebel, and either Stone the Crow, Bury Me in Smoke, or Lifer by Down.

Down here in Georgia, it's rap and rnb. It's where all the rappers originated.
