When I was little, I bought an Xbox JUST for Halo because I played it at a friend's house and it was the coolest fucking game I'd ever seen. Rolling with your buddy in a warthog, calling enemies out, and running for your life from the first sword elite was just the bee's knees at the time. Playing local lan was super duper fun. The campaign for Halo 1? Fucking stellar. Like, tears down your eyes stellar. I even liked the library to be honest. That soundtrack. Oh my god. The soundtrack.
Then Halo 2 multiplayer came out online.
THAT WAS THE BEST FUCKING SHIT EVER. Big team battle. 1 flag. Burial Grounds. BR start. THAT"S MY SHIT! For how glitchy it was (BXB, BXR, etc), Halo 2 probably had the most holy fuck moments for me. I'll share a few anecdotes with you all quickly:
Coagulation. Classic Flag. 4v4.
I respawn after the enemy team stormed our base with good camo use. Somehow, the sniper is untouched on the upper platform. The enemy flag carrier is already mid map near rocket spawn. As per usual, I teleported to the rocks and lined up the sights. I take aim at the flag carrier's head and pull the trigger. At that exact moment, the enemy ghost flew by to harass my team and the bullet rips through his head first, then the flag carrier's. Double Kill. One Shot. We won the round and the game.
That huge fucking cavernous blue map. 8v8 Big Team Assault. Our team is getting slaughtered. The enemy have control of both wraiths and theyre shelling our spawns. My buddy and I crouch walk the bomb around the entire map. We pick up a shotty along the way. Their base is completely empty. I armed the bomb with 2 seconds left in the round.
That being said, I think Halo 3 overall had the most balanced gameplay in that 1v2 scenarios almost always went to the 2 players. In Halo 2, with enough juke prowess, you could easily engage up to 3 opponents. Halo 3 required much more teamwork for success, and ramboing was punished which I think is a good thing. Halo is the only game I've played where such high speed, high health combat can be so tactical and require so much strategy. I also thought that Halo 3 maps rewarded zone control better than Halo 2 maps.
But yeah, Halo 1 campaign is the best, simply because of the story. The rest of the games suffered from Bungie falling in love with its own success and everyone sucking Chief's dick. 1 was the best because you actually felt like you could fail. Also, the ending driving sequence is bananas.
Second Halo 2 map you were thinking of was Waterworks...one of my favorites

H2 > Halo CE > H3 > H4 > Reach
Halo needs a good ranking system back already!!! No ranking system = randoms without mics who don't care + other people only caring about kill/death...
