The H2 BR had a spread, but it was always the same. H3 had a random spread. CE had bloom, not a spread. If you hold down the right trigger with the pistol, you'll see a random bullet spread.
And the style of play in Reach hasn't changed that much from 3. It's still pretty much the same game, really.
If you spam the pistol in Halo CE, aiming at the same area the whole time, you'll have different bullet landings, kind of like what a barrage of shotgun bullets look like on a wall at close range. This happened across all (or most) weapons. The battle rifle, however, because you had a limited triggering rate (eliminating the need for "spread" to make it a more balanced weapon), wasn't instant hit detection. The burst of bullets actually travel a distance over time, which is why you experience a miss (or what you claim to be an excuse for "spread") when trying to hit a target very far range. This means that in Halo 3, you have to lead your shots a tad bit by aiming your reticle a little bit ahead of your opponents displacement. You'll see this a fuckton if you play Halo CE on the pc but that's due to the extremely bad net code.
Trust me, I know my Halo.
