Honestly half the time I don't even meter the light, I just know roughly the ISO/fstop to choose, and judge accordingly if I have to.
That bud picture only took me 2 tries to get it exposed correctly cuzgodly.

I hardly ever post-process my pictures.
Partly because I'm lazy, and overeditted pictures are awful.

Not sure why you don't like the smell.
I have plenty of friends that don't smoke, and they even still say it smells godly.
