Never tried without sphere grid. But you can watch some videos on Youtube.
Some guyz are quite skilled, it's impressive

Just doing no sphere grid would be pretty simple. I've gotten to BFA on a no sphere grid no summon no customize game, but quit because I was tired of trying to farm a haste ring for yuna. Not too hard really, but there were a few resets needed. I did end up getting Masamune and getting to final battle, which is pretty good imo. There are crazier challenges though, like no sphere grid, no customize, no summon, no bb, no overdrive, no escape but I'll never do anything that like that.
