40+ hours. Depends on how fast you read, and how much you actually read. Also depends on how much time you like to spend grinding.

Its going to be the same game, just better graphics... Saying classic movies should not be put on blu-ray?
Wouldn't really be remaking, maybe a poor choice of words.
If the game was remade with current level technology graphics, the game would exposed for being old and outdated. Any nostalgia factor would be lost, and the game would just become like any other run of the mill current gen RPGs.
Face it, the reason classic RPGs are so much better than current gen ones is mainly because RPGs don't push the limits of gaming anymore. Back in the day RPGs were all cutting edge and pushed game systems to their limits with their incredible pre-rendered backgrounds and combat systems. But that was back when gaming was limited by technology, now that technology has expanded RPGs aren't impressive. Most other game genres have just as good if not better looking graphics now, while at the same time pushing the boundaries of the actual gaming engines to the max. RPGs have just been left behind, they are an antiquated system, and remaking an old one that was extremely successful in it's day would just be a waste of resources, both time and money.
I know I'm getting a little off topic here, but I think the future of story driven games is changing. Look at a company like Quantic Dream, they have basically created their own genre of game that is story driven(they made Heavy Rain and Indigo Prophecy). The future of RPGs is headed in the direction that those games are leading, and it's a good thing. Companies like Square Enix are trying as hard as they can to keep traditional turn based combat oriented RPGs alive, but I don't think it'll last too much longer into the foreseeable future. The future is definitely already moving more towards "Interactive Dramas" and Free Roaming environment RPGs. Bye bye random battles.
