His overdrive does 9999...why does it randomly do so much?

Aeon stats are based on Yuna', only that much stronger... The thing is in FFX the aeons are too powerful, specially when you get the last aeons and get hold of the ultimate weapons, this will allow you to do 99,999 and not just 9,999. In fact, towards the end of your game if you care to find the ultimate weapons you'll porbably atleast deal 9,999 damage with just a normal attack from most characters.. . and if you max stats you will do 99,999 with any attack. This makes most of the bosses really easy, however if you do sidequests you'll find bosses that have litlerally millions of HP so aeons stop making so much a diference there. You will also encounter a few bosses towards the end of your playthrough that automatically kill your aeons once you summon them so that you are forced to fight only with your characters and the battle becomes more balance.

Equip Overdrive -> AP + Auto-Phoenix and change mode to Comrade and fight Cactuar King in the arena. Hope he fires 99,999 Needles on the other two. Win.

Note: You can escape and still earn the AP bonus.

I love that cactuar king bonus from the arena. farmed that thing for like 3 hours straight before fighting the ultamite bosses

Auto-phoenix on 2 characters armors

Overdrive mode to get damage -> fill overdrive bar (forgot the name)

Farm Tonberry king in the monster arena.

This, King Tonberry > King Cactuar

All 3 must have that weapon, 2 of them must hit (and have the overdrive mode that fills the bar when you take damage) and the other one must have the overdrive mode that fills the bar when an ally gets hit and stay idle with autophoenix equipped to resurrect party memebers.
