ff6, aka ff3 us is extremely good. The music and characters are unmatched in my opinion. My favorite of all of them, ffvii being a close second and I think the rest stink honestly. ff2 is not in the runnings, it was great but just the gameplay.. ugh. anyways, PLAY ff3 US/FF6Jap!!
Bold: Also called FF6 in US (it's 3 on SNES and 6 on playstation).
If you're actually buying the games, I suggest the following;
Final Fantasy Anthologies [playstation] ($20 now I think): It's FF5 and 6. 5 is so-so but introduced the job system which is just phenomenal. 6 is definitely, without a doubt, one of the best in the series.
Final Fantasy Tactics [playstation or psp] ($20 roughly): Unmatched gameplay. I've played through it 6 times now which is more than any game. Easily the best gameplay of any game for its time.
Final Fantasy 8 [playstation or pc] ($20 once again I believe): Wonderful game. Another great Final Fantasy. Introduction of leveling your summons.
Final Fantasy 10 [ps2] ($20 I believe): If you own a ps2 buy this game. That is all that needs to be said. My one and only gripe with this game is that Tidus is kinda whiny but it makes the game slightly more realistic (not all heroes are unbreakable)
Final Fantasy Legends 3 [original gameboy]: I own this game. It's not bad but it's not great; it truly is a kick to see how games were back then though.
Final Fantasy 9 [playstation] ($20): Solid game. Probably my least favorite of the PS natives (7 8 9) but well worth a play or two. Had a "trance" mode that was quite unique; once in every 8000000 battles (it seemed like that long anyway, that bitch took forever to charge) you get 2-3 turns of super-powers.
Don't base Final Fantasy on x-2 as it is the weakest of all final fantasies. I must say though, they had some potential with it but made it too... bubblegum.
If I had to put it in order of importance I'd say;
7 (to see what caused Final Fantasy to basically define a generation and introduce emo to the world),
10 (groundbreaking graphics for its time, just like how 7's were with a wonderful storyline and impecable gameplay),
Tactics OR Tactics: War of the Lions (replayability is unmatched, WotL is just the PSP name for it with a few lame additions),
8 (Great gameplay, great story. Great game),
6 (very fun game, one of the best. However, it is one of those games that you can wait on since it WILL engross you and you won't be able to escape until you beat it),
9 (can't deny it's a fun game, but it had a lot to compete with against the other FFs),
12 (Uh... yeah... go ahead and play it but don't rush out and buy it).
I'm 20 years old and I've made sure I somehow (legally) have obtained the newest Final Fantasy since I first played 7 when my drug-addict brother thought the commercial made it look trippy only to find out it was not what he expected. Over 10 years of Final Fantasy-ing and I tirelessly anticipate each release (though I've heard some shady things about 13 making me possibly consider renting it first).
I've invested lots of time gathering knowledge about Final Fantasy games. Let me know if you have any questions.
