Well id recommend getting a FAQ from IGN. Its pretty much impossible to get the secret characters without hints. You can even get cloud! (Even though he is weak)

How about any of the gameboy FF's have you played any of them?

The gameboy advance ffs are just remakes of the old ffs on nintendo and snes.
Basically the same thing as the remakes they did for the PS1.

Different kind of characters? Or do you just pick from Fighter, Blk Mage, Theif...etc.

Same chars as in the originals but graphics are beefed up etc.
And like FF origins they put extra dungeons in with bosses from later FFs for an added challenge.
