I loathed the leveling system, the story (OMFG RINOA+SQUALL=LOVE, *sigh*) wasn't engaging to me in any aspect, and the overall difficulty of the game was sure to disappoint.
By all means, FF7 is NOT my favorite FF, I just find it superior to it's suceedent.
The story isn't about Rinoa and Squall, it's about the Garden's elite mercenary forces, SeeD, being used for evil by Edea. As you progress into the game, you'll find out it wasn't Edea but Amizala, a queen from the past. Also, the Rinoa-Squall story is merely a sidestory.
Also, FF8 is infinitely times more harder than FF9 for example, seeing as Auto-life, Auto-potion and Auto regen on a party means attack everything to death. This can be done from level 60 and upwards.

in my opinion they both have flaws but still are both top notch final fantasies
7 - the end bosses are WAYYYYYY to easy if you pimp rpg's out like me
8 - 1000 exp. a level for every level is sort of dumb imo, should increase exp. needed every level.
7 - materia = great idea
8 - card game and refine = sweet
7 - cant think of a different flaw besides bosses are usually weak ass punks. (hardest boss IMO is carry armor, the boss before the sub)
8 - the draw system is time consuming
so 7 has basically 1 flaw while 8 has 2.
IMO 7 wins. RAWR but 8 is longer and i love long rpgs!!!
I REALLY CANT DECIDE, AND NEVER HAVE BEEN ABLE TO!!!!
HELP!!!!
IF the experience increases per level, you'll get to the same leveling fiasco as FF9, where it takes AGES to level up past level 60 or so. And your forgetting that monsters exponentially increase in difficulty as you level up. Have fun beating a level 100 T-Rexaur or Marlboro.
Who draws when you can just cardmod and use GF abilities? The only thing you should be drawing is 200 cures when you need to go to the fire cavern (Ifrit) from Bite Bugs (little blue flying insects). They hit like crap, don't attack that often and you draw lots. I spent 10-15 minutes drawing for those 200 cures. You can skip this, but it's not recommended seeing as cure is a great junction stat and it saves you loads of gil.

FF8 >
Better Story, Better Graphics. FF7 is ridiculously overrated.
Hey Jay, long time no see! How are you doing lately?

I concurr with that statement, FF8 all the way!
