Star Ocean Till The End of Time uses a similar battle system. It's AI controlled for your party members like XII, but XII expanded on the system's limits since then. It had an interesting plot, worth a try at least.
Actually ive played star ocean, its only flaw: Later in the game, you cant control your characters well enough to not die [Some monsters crush mana like nothing, which kills characters...]
I liked how you had a vast hold on what you could control your characters to do.
