In my opinion, if they were to remake Final Fantasy VII, I think they should only keep the story and character designs, then overhaul the gameplay system completely. Considering that the player avatar, Cloud Strife, has a military background, the ATB system doesn't fully suit the tactical combat style military personnel favor; instead, the game would benefit from a combat system more similar to that of Chrono Trigger, where combination attacks are possible, thus bringing out an additional aspect of strategy and time management. Also, the designers can implement aspects of other Final Fantasy games, like the hot swapping of armor and weapons in Final Fantasy X, to further tactical options for players. Likewise, the designers can make a deeper the materia system by changing the way materia linked together; rather than using the linear system used in the original, they could easily explore a grid system, like the character growth system of Final Fantasy X, that allows additional combinations at the cost of the player having to expend more resources on procuring materia.
The Limit Breaks can gain more depth while retaining their names and functions. At the moment, aside from the damage adjustments and animations, the limit breaks are generally the same; however, by giving individual Limit Breaks certain attributes, such as more damage to fliers, inflicts certain blindless, etc, etc, the players actually have more options at their fingertips, and they can choose to use a Limit Break that deal less damage, but provide a useful secondary effect.
Just my thoughts on how I think SQUARE should remake Final Fantasy VII, if they decide to undertake such a project.
yeah the limit break idea is good, instead of a flat out pick the more powerful as it is now. there should be larger advantages to some more than others. the only differences in it now is attacks all enemies or 1 enemy (even though theyre pretty much attack all by the end)
