I'm curious to why this is.

Do you mean lots of gil, or any gil at all? I see the latter being a huge problem, making you correct.

However, from my understanding, it costs no gil to farm seals for grand company gear, or tombstones for darklight gear.

So unless you're not big on do it yourself style play and don't want to work gathering skills, I don't see gil being of much use beyond repairing at end game.

I'm not at end game though, and rather interested where the gold sink is.
