I have to maintain my position, like Lublar, that FFVII, while important is not a great storyline which is something that I seek when I play a console RPG.
Even if you want to add the ever-present greed, self-discovery, and oppression that zarkadon kindly mentioned, they were done better in other RPGs (FFVI is the EASIEST example of this).
However, the storyline is very straightforward and there is not much you can paint beyond chase the bad-guy. I enjoyed the story through the Kalm flashback, from there, I stopped enjoying the storyline. The Materia System was fun and, obviously, the Gold Saucer was great, but as a whole, I lost interest at many points.
FFVIII was far more engaging for me, with a more complex story and characters with greater depth (I felt Cloud, Aeris, and Red XIII were the only ones I felt were fully-developed characters) , in my opinion, but everyone has their own one.

I have expressed my own love of Shining Force, so props to you RiseAgainst1, despite our disagreements on this particular game.
