^ I can give you my opinions as to why it's one of my least favorites. I don't take it to extremes as "shitty", because it's not. But I think it's somewhat overrated.
The materia system was overpowered and made characters feel generic, copies of each other. The characters really didn't have roles, since they all did the exact same things whenever they pleased. Even though the characters did have certain stat progression that differed, the materia system really made it moot.
In terms of difficulty, FF7 is the easiest. This probably ties in with the materia system being overpowered. No fight was really a challenge. Also, there are extremely cheap ways to set up your characters with materia which makes losing a battle pretty much impossible. Losing a battle in that game is pretty embarrassing. Really, the only hard fights are the Ruby and Emerald weapons, and even those aren't that hard to beat.
It did follow the generic formula, as a lot of RPGs do. Where a ragtag group of people gets together to save the world. The only characters that REALLY knew each other were Cloud and Tifa, everyone else were just random people who decided they'd help. Also, the storyline follows the usual "bad guy wants to become more powerful so he can rule/destroy the world". I didn't think the story was told in a particularly efficient matter either. The game had a good pace in terms of progression through the story, but I don't think the actual story telling was the greatest. There were a lot of things that didn't really make sense as the game progressed, things that weren't explained well. I've played the game through all the way a few times, and I know that I didn't have a grip on all the details even after that. I don't consider a story solid if that's the case. I know a lot of people felt the same way.
Things I can agree with though: it does have a good soundtrack, good story pacing with plenty to keep you interested, plenty of side quests and exploration ability, and a solid cast of characters. As far as the characters go, everyone has a strong personality or identity. One thing I hate though, and this isn't REALLY related to FF7, is how much shit Squall gets for being emo in FF8. BUT, Cloud is one of the most emo characters ever, I'd argue he has more angst than Squall, and noone seems to give him any shit. It's obvious favoritism. He's emo, and insane as shit, but it's all good because it's Cloud I guess.
So, Barret & Tifa didn't know each other? Really, Final Fantasy VII was flawless.
We all know Squall is emo, Cloud is a badass.
