1/2 = FF7+FF8

- They differ in what they do great, FF7 had the story of all time, FF8 had the characters of all time. FF8 had a very unbalanced stats system compared to the Materia system though.

3: FF4/FF6/FF12

- Too hard to say... However I can put FF5 as the worst of them all... Didn't get caught in the story or characters in that one. smile.gif

ff5 was awesome, sooo many classes and was a very unique ff game, the japanese 2 was worst, but not bad. just very different as well.
and ff4 is my favorite

FF8 - Loved The Characters Out Of Every Final Fantasy Game. && Quite Enjoyed The Overall Story.
FF9 - Liked The Card Game And Auction Features. Story Was Also Very Good, With Challenging And Strategic Bosses.
FF10 - I Actually Enjoyed Playing Blitzball And I Loved The Introduction To It In The Beginning Of The Game.

My Top 10 regarding the Final Fantasy franchise, only including titles I've completely played through. Granted, this reflects how I feel about the way the gameplay evolved and whether I thought the design decisions were well-made, but this is how I'd rate the games.

01. Final Fantasy VIII
02. Final Fantasy X
03. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
04. Final Fantasy II
05. Final Fantasy VI
06. Final Fantasy V
07. Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
08. Final Fantasy
09. Final Fantasy IV
10. Final Fantasy III

Final Fantasy games that didn't make the Top 10 that I've also played:
Final Fantasy X-2
Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy Tactics A2
Final Fantasy Adventure

you havnt play ff VII? really?, it wouldnt be as fun playing it now than if you did right when it came out. mainly cause knowing the ability of 3-d graphics now makes ffVII look like shit. but when it first came out the graphics were amazing and the game was top nautch.

Actually, I have played Final Fantasy VII; it never makes my top 10, and I just almost always forget I've played it, especially when compared to the two hyper-innovative games that sandwich it. So, yeah, I really should put that on my list, but I always forget. I own a copy of the PC version of both Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII, and I've played Final Fantasy VIII more by far; after the first couple play-throughs, Final Fantasy VII's gameplay system simply fails to intrigue me enough to return for additional run, although, I must admit, I've beaten Final Fantasy VII at least five times.

this part confuses me, ^

ive prob play it 8-10 times wink.gif, idk why but there was somthin about it that made me like it so much, probably the story line and one of the coolest villains of all time, and for the game play, it was different from the rest which makes it so unique, some people dont like unique. but as youve already stated you appreciate the different aspects of each ff game. as for me i really liked ff vii's gameplay. but i guess ff7 just wasnt for you wink.gif

its my 2nd favorite ff behind IV

Compared to Final Fantasy VIII, which I've completed 20+ times, I'd say the fact I've only beaten Final Fantasy VII 5 times isn't really that many. However, if you look at how Final Fantasy VII's gameplay evolved from Final Fantasy VI, it's not really that much different in the materia system is a scaled-back Esper system that requires more time and investment on the part of the player in order to unlock more abilities, and the Limit Breaks, when compared to those in Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy VI, feel somewhat lacking, almost as if they wanted to flesh them out more but ran out of time during the design process. While the concept of chaining multiple materia together was an innovative approach, it still lacked the innovation of its predecessor.

As a game designer, story and character design is of secondary importance to me; while I do feel every game needs a good story and dynamic character designs, those are fluff when compared to the crunch of how the game actually works, and, in this, I feel both Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy VIII were superior than Final Fantasy VII, as both games showed more innovation than Final Fantasy VII's gameplay system, which only felt like a minor upgrade from Final Fantasy VI's and something of an afterthought compared to the franchise's move to a 3D graphical system.

yeah, unfortunatly ffvii was a rushed game, you can tell on many occasions, there are many many translation, grammer and spelling errors in ffvii, many things that seems quite useless, like the 1/35 soldiers, you can only find 12 (besides winning them from gold saucer), and they serve no purpose though there are many rumours on what they do, none are legitiment. Though there was supposed to be a use for them, it was never completed. Though those have NOTHING to do with gameplay, i am simply stating it was a rushed game and i am sure they could have made it better in the more concerned areas as well in which bothers you so.

if they do decide to do a remake (as there are so many rumours about) they should NOT keep it exactly the same, but improve in many needed areas

In my opinion, if they were to remake Final Fantasy VII, I think they should only keep the story and character designs, then overhaul the gameplay system completely. Considering that the player avatar, Cloud Strife, has a military background, the ATB system doesn't fully suit the tactical combat style military personnel favor; instead, the game would benefit from a combat system more similar to that of Chrono Trigger, where combination attacks are possible, thus bringing out an additional aspect of strategy and time management. Also, the designers can implement aspects of other Final Fantasy games, like the hot swapping of armor and weapons in Final Fantasy X, to further tactical options for players. Likewise, the designers can make a deeper the materia system by changing the way materia linked together; rather than using the linear system used in the original, they could easily explore a grid system, like the character growth system of Final Fantasy X, that allows additional combinations at the cost of the player having to expend more resources on procuring materia.

The Limit Breaks can gain more depth while retaining their names and functions. At the moment, aside from the damage adjustments and animations, the limit breaks are generally the same; however, by giving individual Limit Breaks certain attributes, such as more damage to fliers, inflicts certain blindless, etc, etc, the players actually have more options at their fingertips, and they can choose to use a Limit Break that deal less damage, but provide a useful secondary effect.

Just my thoughts on how I think SQUARE should remake Final Fantasy VII, if they decide to undertake such a project.
