Most people didn't think about the FF series until 7 was released. Up until that point, the series was an afterthought compared to other RPGs ( the Secret of Mana, Breath of Fire, and Dragon Warrior series, as well as games like Chrono Trigger and Shining Force, saw far more love than FF).  FF7 was the first 32-Bit era RPG to really capture audiences with great CGs, quality graphics, and a memorable soundtrack. With that being said, with hindsight, FF7 is overrated as an RPG. Of course, it is subjective, but to me IV, V, VI, VIII, IX, and Tactics have FAR better storylines. I will not hate on the game too much, as I enjoyed parts of it, but I find it hard to make it one of the top-3 RPGs of all time. That would put it ahead of Wild Arms, Xenogears, Chrono Cross/Trigger, Baldur's Gate, Vagrant Story, and other quality RPGs; I cannot see that.

On topic: Enjoy your playthrough :)

I personally think FFVI has been the best game out of the series.  The story was solid, the gameplay was amazing, and for when it came out on SNES it was top notch.  Otherwise I personally liked tactics and ix.

Thank you! See.. to the people who thought I was crazy or something for making the remarks I made, I'm definitely not alone. Some people really do have good taste :P

Saying that Xenogears, Wild Arms, Baldur's Gate, and Vagrant Story is better than Final Fantasy VII is laughable.

It's easily in top-3 RPGs of alll time.

Err.. Xenogears is widely acknowledged as having one of the best storylines of all time, which is not FF7s forte as it has a fairly simple story.
Wild Arms 1 is in most people's top-5 if not top-3.
Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 are known, by most RPG-fans, as the "best"(subjective term, I know) PC RPG series.

Vagrant Story is biased, based on my love of FFT, I'll admit. But even in the FF series, 7 is far from the best.

Oh yes, Breath of Fire 2 and 3 are also better, but that was obvious.

I understand you love the game, but not everyone does. Many rational RPG fans dislike FF7 for the same reasons that have been posted before this..

I never played Baldur's Gate, but all I've ever heard from real RPG fans is only how amazing it is.

I've played those other three, and I can say without a doubt that all 3 have big advantages where it counts. And I don't think Vagrant Story is biased for putting it up there. It is so much more compelling and has a much stronger atmosphere than nearly every JRPG I can think of(FF7 included). And saying that Xenogears being better than FF7 is laughable is dumb, you've probably just never even played it. Xenogears is widely accepted as, if not the best, one of the best RPGs on the PS1.

Correction, the first half of Xenogears is widely acknowledged of having one of the best storylines of all time, the second half of the game is so bad its own production team apologised for it.

Wild Arms is in no ones top 5, Wild Arm while good is not even in the same realm of FF7, Chrono Trigger, Lunar Silver Star, Suikoden, Tales of Destiny, Legend of Mana, Etc etc.

Breath of Fire you are right about, amazing series. But the fact you didn't mention Grandia or the other games i mentioned and you did bring up Wild Arms makes me wonder.

Any JRPG fan who hates on FF7 is just a poser, Top 3 greatest game ever made. Only people who don't think so are the ones that think its cool to be "different"

I have beaten Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, and tons & tons more. (Both Chronos > Xenogears) brah. It's ok... And FF7 is widely accepted as the best RPG on the PS1.

I still have the Shining Force (Shining in the Darkness, 1, 2, and Sega CD's Shining Force CD. **Not the shitty ones released for PS1+ I've beaten them all tho) as my #1 RPG-line of all time.

That is one of the most ignorant statements I've ever read. It is a good game, but it is highly overrated. There is nothing REALLY special about the storyline. It's just the stereotypical chase the bad guy who is trying to destroy the world plot. Ragtag also comes to mind. Also, the story isn't told very well, and at times the plot is all over the place. I'm not denying that the game is one of the most important RPGs to westerners, because before ff7 RPGs weren't really that popular over here, it basically put RPGs on the map for us. But still, overrated for all the reasons mentioned by me and others.

it's also a story of greed, opression, enviroment... it's also kinda about how anybody can feel lost at some point of their lives and need to find themselves (the part where Cloud goes through his memories or when Cloud tells everybody to leave the ship and find a reason good enough to make them face Sephiroth for example)
