I doubt 8 is the worst in the series, I've seen reported from multiple creditable game sources that 8 sold more copies than any other game in the series, at least initially. Meaning it sold more than 7 did. 8 was the fastest selling Final Fantasy game, reportedly until 13 came out.

FF9 is like the culmination of all things good in the FF world, it is THE Final Fantasy game.  It combines the old school art style and character designs with the great plot and character development of the(at the time) newer FF games.

vouch, I love IX because of this, anyone who enjoys most of the FFs HAS to enjoy IX even if it's justa little bit

I don't think this is a good point though, fastest selling videogames usually respond to great expectations rather than the game's actual quality, and an important part of the expectation surrounding FFVIII was due to the great reception and critical aclaim FFVII got... not to mention lot's of people got onto the FF wagon with FFVII so FFVIII had a much larger market than FFVII when it came out

That's the only reason I finished it the first time because I was so excited about getting the job system back. But once was enough.

That's not all true though. Up to a certain point FF8 had actually sold more copies than FF7. Which means it drew a larger audience. Sure, some people played FF7 first, but it also means that a lot of people that played it never played FF7 either. Of course, now with all the milking of the FF7 franchise it has once again surpassed all the others in terms of total sales. But, FF8 was just as well received by fans and critics as FF7, which is an amazing accomplishment considering FF7 is the biggest fanboy game of all time, and it is the first FF game that most FF fans played. A game(FF8) that can compare evenly to critics and sales ratings to the game that pretty much localized the FF franchise in North America carries a lot of weight.

It could be said that the hype from 7 was what brought those massive sales initially in all fairness, Also adding to the fact that by this time the PS1 was the predominant console, With the N64 starting to reach the end of its cycle. There was also massive promotion for 8. Including adds and a very basic internet advertisment (which was one of the first of its kind on the old dial up internet)

There were lots of reasons if you look at it. Most of them being imaginitive advertising from a mostly stagnant industry. You can almost compare it with the sales FF9 made off the coke ad that played for months for an example of outside the box thinking.

The only reason 13 sold well was multi consoles and a massive hype on a system that sorely lacked RPG's.
