I think FF is ailing for the same reason as other current gen RPGs. The increase in technology and graphics is taking RPGs and turning them into movies, when they used to be more like books. Since the games are so much more detailed the imagination isn't allowed to wander as much, like it would when reading a book. I think this is a transition that a lot of people are having trouble dealing with.
Personally, I didn't really like 13 either. The story was somewhat original, but the characters weren't really that interesting. The game moved at a bad pace too, probably because of the uninteresting characters. Plus, the game tries to sell a new combat system, but there is really no strategy to it since you can only control one character.
If(when) they make 15, people are going to buy it just because it's FF, the most recognizable name in the RPG genre. 12 and 13 weren't total busts by any standards either. If you check sites with game rankings, you'll see that they all are over 8 out of 10, even by user ratings. They haven't had as many user rankings, but they also haven't been out for 10+ years now haha. 15 is by no means in any danger of not selling, FF has a reputation for making quality games. I think the only difference between now and 10+ years ago is that there are more options for gamers. Back then there wasn't online for console gamers, or terrific shooters or action games. It was pretty much just RPGs or platformers. Times have changed.
EDIT: Also, the video game market is a lot bigger than it was 10 years ago. Even if there are going to be more people that have a dislike for these games, there are going to be that many more that like it to balance it out. It's just not that everyone is on forums talking it up. I happen to think that FF as a whole is overrated. Not to say that I don't like it, because I do. But, take the PS1 for example, when RPGs were really at their peak. There are just as many quality RPGs, if not better, than FF7, 8, and 9 on the PS1. It's just that FF has so much more marketing and production on the games, that they have always been the most recognizable. FF7 was so instantly popular because noone had ever seen a game with THAT magnitude of production before. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
Dude that was way to an intelligent post for this site. Props to you.
I agree with you nearly completely except if you look the sales on 12 and 13 compared to 7,8,9 then yeah, 15 is going to be in some trouble and 13 was released on TWO consoles... Also FF7 wasn't just well produced, it was just an amazing game that drew a widespread audience from what was at that time really only a massive seller in the asian nations. You might play it 10 years later and rag on it but seriously, that game blew minds in its time. I would be more inclined to say that 8 and 9 power housed off 7's success. Also FF anthology (4,5 or 2 and 5 depending on if your aussie, british or american) and 6. which were re released on ps1 because of said success.
But srsly, Valuc, Your opinion doesn't count. You have been voided. Anyone who thinks 13 was a decent game is straightaway out. Opinion or not. Its like saying asians are good drivers. Or that voting for George Bush was a good idea. Its just wrong.
