you exaggerate.
all final fantasies have a few decent challenges your first time through and all get extremely easy when you get to know the game. the story line is far more indepth than the previous 6 games before it, which clearly you are blind to. and the ff's after it are very good but not quite the same. side quests add a huge chunk of story and help understand the game better and are more than worth it to do(get extra characters, ultimate weapons and the best materia in the game). and i really doubt you have a "100%" file, if you do then i assure you i have a 200% file.
while by no means can ff7 be everyones favorite game, you tend to try to consistantly shut it down and call it out in the mixture of things simply because it is the majorities favorite.
if you try hard enough to not like a game you will succeed; which is unfortunate.
where as i feel the same about ff6 as you do ff7, good but not the best, everytime i see someone glorify it i dont try to pick at it and call it a subpar game because i dont 100% agree with them.
i used to have convos with haikenedge on this forum alot. he liked ff7 but it wasnt his favorite game(8 was). and he would explain to me why it was overrated, he was quite thorough to the point where i could fully understand where he was coming from.
but it wasnt based on story and content which he fully appreciated (he had played ff7 half a dozen times or so, 8 20+ times.). it was on the simplicity of the battle system and how that was quite generic and dull compared to 8(but still a step up from previous ffs) and similar things to that which is why he thought it was overrated.
that makes perfect sense while you try call out ff7 with blunt and ignorant opinions, you have called it a subpar ff when it actually unarguably revolutionized the series and made the series as popular as it is today. unfortunately the series started losing its touch a bit when squaresoft became squareenix (imo, ff 1-10 FOREVER!!)

Like posted above this is my opinion, not intended to offend anyone but as Nate and I continue this will be a never ending side war.
1.The storyline was drawn out and bland, although I don't mind FF7 I just don't see the huge dispute about it, It's another FF game, same could be said about FF6 to people, I can get drawn into FF4/6 rather than 7, I find the storyline was hard to actually draw me in to it. Some characters, Yuffie/Cid/Cait Sith just don't seem to fit into the game, Yes they all fall into the storyline somehow and for negative or positive, prolong the game.
2.As far as the battle system and what kaienedge said, That's cool, but I prefer a simple battle system, FF12/FF13 battle system were fun at first but got to be lame, basic Fight,Magic,Item,Run is FF to me. Certain games, like Legend of Dragoon and Chrono Cross have more indepth battle systems which work for there games but as for FF Simple works.
3.The Materia system was an alright idea imo but in the end it just turned all your characters the same, the lack of special abilities just makes stale characters, Limit breaks barely make any difference in this case since you can't store them and usually have to use them unless you opt out to hold it and void your character.
4. There were barely any points of the game where a huge twist came or something happened that made it harder, it was slow boring pace through the whole game, adding in a few minigames "Bike race, Snowboarding, Golden Saucer" to hype up the speed and then drop down, The best part about FF7 which actually had me stoked when I first played it was being in Midgar, it had a dark sinister feel to the game and it ended up being a long dull race.
5. Sidequests - Although they were added into FF7 for initial storyline perspectives, half of the extra hidden secrets in the game steer off in a direction like most, Hidden Materia =/= Espers, Hunt them all down at the end of the game and your characters still turn out to be the same strength, In every Final Fantasy there are "final, or end game" weapons, Sabins Dragon Claw, The Illumina Sword for Edgar/Terra/Celes, Imp Halberd for Gau, Tons of Final weapons in FF6 that benefit your characters to do it, the only difference to people is that you can actually see your over dramatically sized weapons in FF7.
6. Unarguably revolutionized - There is some truth behind this although most people picked up Final Fantasy 7 because of the Advertisement to it, Twist the tables and Advertise the old Final Fantasy games and you'll come across the same over hyped reaction, like Most Call of Duty games.
7, Blunt and Ignorant opinions are the easiest way to sum up ones perspective, I could go on and on in a essay about the Downside to FF7 in comparison to other FFs, I can also spin the perspective and compare it to 12 making it look like the greatest FF around, sure I may not have the 100% File, but near close as you would call an exaggeration, but I highly doubt many have a 100% of FF7, or 6 for that matter.
8. Agreed the Final Fantasy series has kinda plummeted in quality since Enix has emerged but nonetheless Final Fantasy games are still fun, most people will disagree about 13 due to long UN-needed cut scenes, but overall gameplay wise it was fun, the characters in the game, some whiny all work well in cohesion to make this game pull off, Even 12 IMO wasn't the greatest game due to gameplay, but it was a complete different aspect of the battle system where most gamers weren't used to being able to put down there controller and have the game play itself, this aspect imo sucked, i'd rather be in the action hands on, if I die I want it to be my fault.
9. Since you didn't want a blunt argument, there are many other reason which should not factor, like Soundtrack, which matter to me, some Songs in Ff7 are sick, but some just dissapooint.
