play 7,1,4,6,8,9

in no specific order, but if youre planning on playing a bunch do this imo.

ff7 will give you the epic final fantasy game feeling if you really follow the story line, but is still fairly simple.
then do 8 and 9 after because gameplay/graphics are similar and very good also longer and more complicated.

but definatly give the classics a chance. ff1(i suggest the remake version) has some hard parts and an suprisingly decent story considering the time it was created and will really allow you to appreciate the series.
and then 4 and 6 (2&3 on super nintendo) which are same type of graphics and concept just cooler and more indepth.

ff10 has annoying voice acting but is still fun and far more unique compared to the previous, and then 12(also annoying voice acting) and 13(better voice acting, but i just plain hate voice acting) are different yet again. 12 and 13 are fun in their own way but they are both my least favorite.

just if you really want the heart n soul of the ff series play as many as you can 1-9. starting with 7 imo as it is the most grasping. and will allow you to understand the movie advent children :3

how ever if youre a new generation gamer and graphics have a hindrance on youre ability to like a game, i say put that aside or just play 13(but do not judge the series by it)

Final Fantasy VI/III was the best Final Fantasy, period. I've played through them all, including Tactics/Mystic Quest, and even the Final Fantasy Legends on the gameboy (Legend II was the best of those, but the series was based off SaGa Frontier.

If you want to start with a Final Fantasy, start with the first one and progress through each of them, instead of heading straight to the middle of the list with VI or VII. You'll understand more easter eggs, more nods to the earlier games in the series and get an idea of the progression the series has had to make over 25 years.

But that's not absolutely necessary is it? Each game is distinct enough that it doesn't really on each other to get a better understanding of the story. You might find some quirks of meeting Cids or something in every game, but I dunno...

I think you got that part backwards. It should be:

ff7 will give you the simple final fantasy game feeling if you really follow the story line, but is still fairly epic.

i meant simple as in there isnt an overwhelming amount of content. but it really gives you the feel for final fantasy.

what youre saying sounds just as good tho.

starting at 1 and playing # by # is a good idea. but if he doesnt like the aspects of #1 he might not give the more developed final fantasys a chance.
just imo ofc.

I would say FFVI for a good story line, although the graphics are kinda old school

Well I'd say for a beginner IX is the most straight forward one; it's not too easy or too hard, has a great story, easy to handle characters, skills and battles are work in a simple way, etc.

FFX is also a good option, but you will miss out many sidequests if it's your first time playing it; still it's great fun.

only one i've play is FF IX .... best game i've ever played. idk about the other games, but i can relate this game to my life. it's so deep, and true... it's great. there are some unnecessary aspects to the game, fighting wise or whatever, but overall it's the best game i've ever played.
