But nah, it's not about that at all, it's just when you look at the game aside from all the hype and popularity, the basic elements of it like the characters aren't great. Some are kinda bad, like a number of the characters, equipment / materia system and parts of the story, some are mediocre, like the combat system and the music, some are good, like the cgi scenes and summon sequences. It all balances out to be just a mediocre game, it wouldn't even be worth mentioning if it weren't for it being an early Playstation RPG and the first RPG most of the new generation of gamers played. It's like the Applebee's of RPGs; bland, tasteless, sort of everywhere. Nowhere near as good or elegant as fine dining, and too commercial to be home cooking; it feels very.. mass produced. As it should though, as it was produced for the masses, and like you said, the majority.

But the majority consists of a dominate percentage of idiots, just watch any election in any country, or turn on the TV for a minute and that becomes more than obvious.

I liked the game, I just think it set kind of a bad precedent; I would rather have had a more solid and deep game be the RPG that popularized the genre, because it sets a standard for video game makers and the public; and FF7's best aspects were things like the CGI and the battle graphics, and those were the things that were then made "important" for all future RPG's, to the point where those things have basically been the focus - making a pretty game with homogenous characters, ones that everyone can kind of customize and everyone can like. I think that has hurt the genre, I like quirky characters, originality in story and the likes. Even if it still had to be Square, I would rather have seen Xenogears or Chrono Cross be the game that defined popular. The whole genre of turn based RPG's would be COMPLETELY different today if either of those games had, as they are much more unique and original. Maybe it wouldn't have made things quite so absurdly popular, but at least we would have a lot more quality instead of shit like FFX-2 and all these mini sequals they have made like Crysis Core. It takes a lot of convincing for me to even bother buying a new RPG now, they are all the same.
