i voted ff7 for my favorite ff. the graphics blow, but the storyline is good and once you get into it, it's hard to stop playing. and the materia setup is genius, im a huge ffX fan but ff7 takes the cake imo.

I think the materia thing was kinda crap, though I agree the graphics were poor (other than the cutscenes).

What's bad about materia is that it completely destroys the individuality of the characters, and limit breaks do NOT make up for it. The whole equipment / battle system for the game is sub-par; one type of weapon per character, arm bands = the only type of armor.. it's all so limited. And materia is so overpowered that it lets you turn any character into a magic killing machine, weapons become pointless, everything is just "how many materia slots does it have".

But I think FF7 was made to be a mainstream seller, so they really dumbed down what an RPG was with an overly simplified story / gameplay system, so it ended up kind of rough around the edges and very cliche, but hugely popular.

FF6 is a better candidate for best of the series, as is FFX

It's still stupid to have a different "best FF" post every week, there are better RPG's out there than just Final Fantasy ones; all the games in the series work out to be of a fairly average to good quality

Impossible to decide between FF8 and FF7. FFX is also nice, I like the storyline a lot but the other two is just... you know.

I'm torn between FF8 & FF9 for my favorite.

Although FF7 had an amazing story, simply amazing, awesome graphics for the time, some sick CG. It wasn't my favorite.

It may have been because I started with FF8 that it is my favorite. I still go through it at least once or twice a year since the day I got it biggrin.gif

FF9 is in my top two because I liked reverting back to having more than three characters and the story in that game was equally as amazing. Kuja was pretty homo but almost a badass at the same time and I loved the ability system. If you didn't have the right abilities Necron was a mega bitch at the end.

And Ozma, don't get me started on Ozma.

FF9

Something about the story and little plotlines like Steiner and Beatrix's love affair, Vivi's doubt about his soul, the Tantalus Gang tongue.gif, etc. It just all created a story and adventure that I would never forget. Although 7 and 8 were amazing in their own respect, I enjoyed the brighter, cartoony, and cheerful aspect of FF9. The graphics also contributed greatly to the experience as choosing to go with a more childish tone helped the gameplay.
The game just absorbed the player into the world whereas new Final Fantasy's such as FF12 are bland.
The ending was beautiful too.

FF8 is my favourite.

*Spoilers Ahead*
I love the story, even though it gets a bit weird when Time Compression is introduced later on. There are a lot of talking points left after you complete the game, leaving an element of mystery about some of the aspects of the story. Who exactly was Ultimecia, a sorceress in the future that so little is known about? Who are Squall's parents? How exactly does Time Compression work? Etc.

I really liked the characters and the ways that they interacted. An example being the rivalry between Squall and Seifer and also how Seifer's personality changes throughout the game. He goes from Squall's rival to the pawn of a sorceress to a psychotic madman to a normal guy.

I liked the setting of the game. It sort of reminded me a bit of the real world (mainly in Galbadia) with the technology that existed. Computers, cars, missiles, space travel, etc. I prefer that sort of setting to a fantasy setting like was seen in FF9 (castles, small towns/villages, and places with unrealistic technology like crystals, magic, floating platforms, etc).

The junction system was pretty good since you could customise your characters the way you wanted, although if you knew how to abuse it, it made the game too easy.

Graphics...the cutscenes were great and a lot of the environments were pretty good as well. The only things I didn't like were the character models and the world map, but that's to be expected on the PS1.

The game had great music to go with it too. Loved The Man with the Machine Gun (Laguna's Theme).

Quite honestly, I have only bothered playing from FF7 up, and my friend played some of the other ones, but the one he was playing (can not remember title) was kinda boring, looked like an old game from the 80's.

how can you say this! they were true classic, ff1 was not even mentioned
