Yeah they system changed a bit from game to game, but they were all still classic turnbased RPGs; this changed after X-2. IMO they should have kept the main line for classic turn based RPGs, and created a new line of games for other battle systems. And even though 11 and 14 are also called FF Online, that's not their official name and they are placed in the main FF line, which imo is no place for an MMO.
Most FF games aren't purely turn-based. Just because you stand in a straight line, across from the enemy who is also standing in a straight line, doesn't mean it's a turn-based game. Really, only the first few FF games were turn-based, nearly all the rest use Active Time Battle, or some extremely similar form of ATB. X was somewhat turn based, but it wasn't round based like a traditional turn-based game. Just because there is more happening on the screen in newer games doesn't mean it's not using a similar battle system. Final Fantasy XII, for example, does use an ATB system, but it's just free roaming and distance matters somewhat. Everything is still stat based though just like in every other FF game. There is more happening on the screen, that's the only real difference. It was an obvious upgrade to the RPG genre, technology advanced, so developers started making use of it.
And there is no "line" in the FF series, the numbers mean nothing except for being some form of identifier of which game is which. I haven't played XIV yet so I can't speak for it myself, but FFXI is a great addition to the FF franchise. I think it does the FF franchise just as much justice as any other FF game.
