i'm just finishing up the game right now. all and all it was just ok. i mean it can't hold a candle to ff7. there's no real side quests worth doing. besides the ones in ruin which get your party back and some colosseum. the game has free roam, which is great, however the real time dumps in this game are random. w/out a strat you are bound to miss out on so much stuff that there are little to no hints about. trial and error in the colosseum can take a lot of time. the hidden attributes associated with many armors/weapons is not known until the chance you encounter an enemy who casts a specific element on you.
where final fantasy 7 had ruby/emerald, the underwater reactor, an ultimate weapon for everyone and an ultimate limit break. mastering all the materia and equipping them. the golden saucer and all its wonder. chocobo breeding, chocobo racing, the fighting arena. trying to get the final single ultimate materia for each type.
8 had omega and the card game, ultimate weapons for each character. the card game in 8 is a lot of fun.
9 had the cardgame. too bad the card game was awful.
10 had blitzball, which was an easy way to drop countless hours and capturing all the monsters to form the mega monsters.
6 just had nothing like this. the story was good, but all and all i still think 7,8, and 10 are better games. i used to think tactics was better but after replaying 6 i think 6 is better than tactics, but tactics is still unique and very fun in it's own way.
same can be said for 1-5 also. i understand that 1-6 are old and on inferior systems, but ultimately the lack of possible side quests makes them inferior.

terra with genji gloves + offering and then equip atma + illumina > kefka! oh i had so much fun lookin at her chopping him into pieces
*shudders*
offering prevents the holy (+100% critical) from occurring on the lightbringer. that's like the best thing about it.

I'm sort of glad I hadn't touched the game at all until recently. Every minute of that game had me captivated, where as a child I would have been picking my nose or eating a grilled cheese and mashing the 'X' button during some of the most memorable moments.
My only regret with my playthrough was that I never got a single economizer. I had every single item in the game except an economizer. I was told 'oh just farm dinosaur island, eventually a Brachosaur will drop one' and after three or four hundred Brachosaurs, I never got one. Then I do some google research and find out you can win economizers at the goddamn Colosseum. How wack is that?
they do drop them but it can take some time, you can also steal them from aquilas.
