They are all separate story lines though so you can play any of them standalone you don't need to play them as a series. They are genereally typical JRPGs with turn based combat or time based combat.
Good ones to try for beginners:
5, 8, 9, 10, 12
other good ones:
1, 4, 6, 7
The graphics aren't too pretty nowadays for most of them but all epic games.
part 8 is the best!
