Furthermore, you will find out if it's significantly better on the ps3 than on the 360 since I've been toying with the idea of getting a ps3 lately, and this would be a big reason why I would. You should also clear it up for me: which ps3's would let me play my old ps2 games, and where can I get those?

I own both 360 and PS3, along with a slew of other consoles, and can honestly say I prefer PS3.
PS3 has much better media capibilities. I often find my PS3 as more of a media server then a console. You can throw any .avi onto a external hard drive and watch it on PS3, and PS3 will build it on it by automatically adding chapters, etc. While 360 you have to sync to your PC, use the Windows Media Center app (which isn't too great), then are vastly limited by file types.
I also prefer the controller, but that is preference.
The PS3 XMB, also in my opinion, is better then the 360 dashboard. 360 leans more towars "Mii's", little avatar rip off of Wii, where as in PS3 at any givein time in any given game you can press the home button to reveal more options. Little things like that, to me, make PS3 the more serious console.

Good points, and helpful to most people, though I have a capable computer that handles all of my media needs. I'm mainly interested in the blu-ray capabilities and the ability to bust out some of my favorite classics whenever I want. Will keep this in mind though, I might find some of those options convenient. How big of a hard drive do I need if I'm not storing lots of media on there? I'm assuming save game files and game downloads (map packs and the like) take about the same amount of space as on the 360? I've had a 20 gig hd for my 360 since I got my first one years ago and have never needed anything bigger.

How about first run through with the most accuracy in getting the best of whatever is possible without guides/tips/cheats.

edit; as you all know, I use an old Trinitron Sony Television when I played Gears 2 / Halo 3. That means the quality was very terrible and so I will be migrating to a better television

No timeframe, just first to finish at most accuracy. Ofc this will only work of the game turns out to have some features of FF12,7,10.
Like there are items/accessories you can find and not be able to buy. That's one reason why I didn't like FF12, you were able to buy all the weapons but the ultimate at a store.

Yeahhhh...God knows how long I worked on getting Tidus's ultimate in ffx. For some reason I just couldn't do that damn chocobo race. I'm pretty sure my controller wasn't working correctly, it was an old one and it had trouble turning at extremely inopportune moments. Pissed me off to no end. I got the ultimate in one playthrough and never really tried for it again.
