If you start before final fantasy 6 (3us) your making a huge mistake.

final fantasy 4 (2 us)

Many believe ff6/3 to be the best ff. I think it is so. Second best is ff7. FF8 is ok, and 9 is a bit less than 8. The rest are shit.

Play 7, then 8, then 9 (in that order). Each of these will give you lots of things to do in terms of gameplay, side quests, and mini games.

DO NOT get 10 or above first, as 10 and above strayed too far from the earlier games and are not as good (personal opinion, but is also shared by a majority of the FF fanbase too). I have played every single FF game that has been released (with the exception of 11 because it's for the PC) and can honestly say 7, 8, 9 are the best.
