If you want older, go play the first (4? if I remember right) for the 8-bit Nintendo.
Don't forget to play the ones for SNes too, not to mention the Legends for gameboy. ALL great games, if you aren't a graphic-whore. (someone who only gives a damn about the graphics in a game)

I also agree that X-2 was pathetic, I hated that game. (the ONLY FF I can honestly say I truly hated, though I didn't much care for 9 or 10 either, haven't played any more after X-2.. They lost their way.)
I just finished playing through 2(4) again, Cecil ftw, even though he looks like a chick for the last half of the game.
Playing through Mystic Quest again now, almost done with it too..
Trying to think of which one I wanna play through next, contemplating Crystal Chronicles. I still haven't really played that one, the start was a let-down as far as FF's go..
