Well, I never fully accepted the idea of FF6 having a main character, mainly because it goes into great detail of EVERY characters past, and you aren't forced to keep her in your main party. She was the one you started off with and parts of the main storyline dealt with her, but imo, FF6 was made in a way that you could pretty much choose your favorite character and use them as the main.
Anyways, the difference between FF13 and versus is pretty simple. On both games, it takes place in the same universe and same times (not sure about times), but are two completely different stories. Just think of FF13 as a world, and the two games are different stories that come from it.
There's also a third one, but I can't recall the name. From what I've read, the chances of it being released in America are slim to none though

That is true.. which is one of the things that makes it an unmatched game, every character is strongly developed and deeply rooted. However, Terra is the link, the binding element between the two sides which fought in the war of the magi, and the one true example of harmony within the world. In the world of ruin, despite all that is going on and all that has gone badly, she remains strong and motherly.
Essentially, Terra is the personified representation of the planet itself.. so you could argue she is the lead, or intended lead, even though any of them could be. Play FF6 and do everything in it, s2StyLeZ; Cloud and the rest of the FF7 cast will very quickly drop off your list of best characters / heros xD he's paper thin and cliche (though very commercial).
