Nah, it's not. Not everyone wants to waste 50 hours on a game missing everything and then go through it again for another 100+ hours. There are things you'd NEVER get without a guide, and yeah playing it on your own once is a fun and good way to do things, but in the case of FF8, and FF8 specifically, unless you really want to spend a ton of time on it, just use a guide, there is no shame in it.

A LOT of people DESPISE FF8. Using a guide can help new players enjoy it more. There is no fun in running around not knowing where the fock you are and should be, nor is there any fun in completely missing spells, summons, and other things just because you didn't know you could, not to mention other things.

for FF8 use the FAQ only to recive the GF. i recommand you to take a special GF guide, use 'draw' on every boss, and speak to Cid every time you get a chance untill you will recive a special item. (dont use it before saving!!!). you also shuldent miss Odin coz he rulz.

i also recommand in FF9 to 'Steal' from every boss.

I didnt use a guide for 8 and I got 80% of the stuff.. Didnt use a guide for 9 and got the majority of stuff so I don't see the point in using 1. You just search areas thoroughly (sp?) and make sure u get everything.

FF9 was pretty good... I have the original FF7 with the original strategy guide... Niiice.
