8

In 7 the materia was good but it was just magic spells. Either for support or whatever. the only way you actually helped your char's attacks or def was with the elemental materia.

8 on the other hand had many different combinations of junctions that could change your characters attributes greatly. By the end of 8 you can have a char that absorbs almost anything and with every blow they deal they inflict almost every status effect. IMO that was the best skill development that left it all in your hands as to how you wanted the char to be.

yea well in 8 armor + accessory was also excluded and making weapons was gay. FF Tactics, FF 5, FF10-2, and FF12 offer more variety and choice than FF8 in skills, types of skills, builds, and equipment

-Furthermore FF7 was not all Magic
-Summons are almost the same as FF8 if not better
-Command Materia same as Command box in FF8 and has more choices
-And FF7 did not ignore the purpose of Accessories for extra effects or Armor for base def

I take into account greatly the battle and more importantly skill development portion of these games, it seems that most of them had genuinely good story lines (though some were better than others ofc). what i think makes and breaks a game is the battle/skill development portion of the game.

I highly rate:
FF6/3
FF7
FF9
FF10-2 (even though the gameplay wasnt as good as FF10)
FF Tactics

I lowly rate:
FF1
FF8
FF12(The battle system is good but buying skills? nty)

My favorite though has to be FF Tactics just because of the amount of thought that went into the Skill allocation with JP/XP for lvling

are you counting 11, i never got to actually play it but it seems like the character building is even better than most of FF series like it is in most MMORPG's

FFXI char building is just like any MMO you gotta build up all ur skills such as healing magic skill or any other magic skill, or ur skill with axes or katanas or whatever weapon
therefore building up the char is a big task even if ur at lvl 75(max) it can take a while to get ur skill levels up to 250(max), because u have to fight monsters that are over ur lvl(which there are tons...)

and by far FFT was the best for char building cuz of the time you had to spend to build up JP to get super high cost skills eg. Bahamut or to build up the job lvl of that class to unlock other classes eg. Mime and some skills made the game alot easier by making a nasty char without having to try too hard...
eg. my awesome monk with the ability "Two Swords" which effectively gave him 2 hits, and anyone whos play FFT knows how nasty monks are in terms of dmg at higher lvls

Thats really hard to choose...the job system from tactics was AWESOME and the sphere grid from FF10 was amazing IMO.

FF8's junctioning was OP
FF7's materia was just plain cool

Job system from 5 was pretty good too
