FF6 is the best, FF4 follows, then FF7 or 8, series plummits downhill after that. 7 and 8 both have some good points but they have a lot of bad as well. Materia is an awful system, and the items in 7 are awful too (equipment = a braclet, one type of weapon, and accessory? wtf).. they should have spent a bit more time on that. Plus it is about as cliche as it can get. FF8 isn't cliche at all, but instead is just downright strange at times, the magic system in 8 is crappy as well, but the GF system is unique and redeeming.
FF7 is when the series, and RPG's in general, went mainstream, and whenever something goes mainstream in the U.S., it rapidly becomes garbage =\ (anime for example. i'm sorry kids. naruto is awful, and so is everything else on cartoon network.)
They are still good games, but way, waaay overrated. Just because it is the first RPG most people ever played doesn't make it the best rpg ever

I think that title belongs to a very rare PS1 RPG made by Konami.
And whoever said FF12 was the best, shame on you. The game practically plays itself >_> games are supposed to be games, not interactive movies.

Tho Final Fantasy Tactics was a stoke of genious as well.
And just so you know on that, Final Fantasy Tactics wasn't original at all. Square got the team that made Tactics Ogre earlier and used the same game engine to make it. If you play TO you'll notice that FFT, gameplay wise, is just about a 100% copy. TO was a stroke of genius, FFT was a very fun game that was built off of it
