Isn't there an option that you can play the game and have the enemies wait to attack you after you finish inputting your attacks.
Was like that in the demo I got in Dragon Quest 8
the demo isnt even close to the the real game ... but no theres no way to disable active time battling ,, but what you can do are set up somethign called gambits which has your character do certain things when certain conditions are met .. such as ... casting cure when hp < 30% or attacking the closest enemy
