Emerald only does 9999 damage to your party if you have 9 or more materia (he does 1111 damage per materia you have equipped). So basically only use the materia you really need. Without miming KotR, you could probably use Omnislash and still beat him fairly easy. Definitely less frustrating than KotR because of it's long animation.
Omega Weapon was extremely easy too since he has a fixed attack pattern. His Megido Flame attack (9998 damage to all) actually HELPS you. 3 people at 1HP = easy limit breaks. After Megido Flame he uses Gravija (which takes off 75% of everyone's HP). 75% of 1HP rounded down = 0 damage, therefore your guys are still at 1HP, therefore you can still do Limit Breaks very easily. Then he uses Terra Break (12 hits doing 9999 damage). You don't need Holy War to survive this, just have your characters use Defend. Since Terra Break is a physical attack, it will do 0 damage to everyone. Also, you can refine the Bahamut card for 100 Megalixirs. Easy peasy.
I'd say, for me, the toughest story final boss would be in FFX since I'm really bad with the Sphere Grid. Also, most of the tougher side bosses in FFX too, again for the same reason. Not to mention, stat maxing in FFX isn't really my cup of tea. I was never really a big fan of FFX.
i didn't know that about emerald. i just normally max out on materias and go at em till i drop. i almost killed him on first try (no miming or omnislash) when he was lucky enough to make me run outa mp.
i'm looking at a perf file with no refining in it on the 1-time cards. and he uses meteor on me every time after he uses Megiddo Flame, so i dunno why it's different for you. I only attempted him twice and i was killed by the combo both times since i wasn't expecting it.
and anyone who says sephiroth was even remotely hard on ff7 apparently did not know how to play the game. he killed himself on counterattacks on the last time i faced him. it was rather sad.
