Although this game is my favorite FF, and one of my top favorite RPGs, and I love it to death.. going to have to pass. Got some other RPGs that are long overdue to be beaten that I need to get to. Already beaten Tactics from start to finish 3 times so I need to get some other games beaten before the summer ends haha.
Just opened my last save file though, here was my party setup right before the final boss:
Ramza (Squire). Skills - Guts, Punch Art, HP Restore, Two Swords, Move +3
Level 73 Gear - Excalibur, Save the Queen, Thief Hat, Power Sleeve, Bracer
Winter (Archer). Skills - Charge, Sing, HP Restore, Concentrate, Move +3
Level 69 Gear - Gastrafitis(crossbow), Crystal Shield, Thief Hat, Power Sleeve, Bracer
Anton (Lancer). Skills - Jump, Punch Art, Hamedo, Two Hands, Move +3
Level 68 Gear - Javelin(the good one), Crystal Helmet, Reflect Mail, Germinas Boots
Singleton (Knight). Skills - Battle Skill, Draw Out, Blade Grasp, Two Hands, Move +3
Level 64 Gear - Ragnarok, Crystal Helmet, Reflect Mail, Bracer
Those are my main 4. The last member just depends how I feel at the time really, or what I might need for a fight. The other choices were:
Beowulf (Temple Knight). Skills - Magic Sword, Yin Yang Magic, Arrow Guard, Defend, Move-Find Item
Level 50 Gear - Rune Blade, Crystal Shield, Crystal Helmet, Crystal Mail, Magic Gauntlet
Cloud (Soldier). Skills - Limit, Item, Blade Grasp, Short Charge, Move +3
Level 61 Gear - Materia Blade, Thief Hat, Black Costume, Bracer
And I'd occasionally change some of the characters above to summoner / white magic.
Some thoughts:
My best two characters were by far Ramza and Anton(My Lancer). I recommend always having a Lancer in your party, their ability to move vertically and horizontally is unmatched, and they can attack all across the map. Basically Ramza and Anton would go out and do all the damage, Singleton died alot.. he seemed to be targeted I swear haha. Winter(my archer/bard.. yes I crafted him after Robin Hood haha) would stand back and use buffing songs at the start, then I'd usually change him to healing songs. Also, if there was a pesky running enemy, I'd send Winter after him since he has range. Sometimes I'd change the Bracer off of Winter and change it to Germinas Boots. Germinas Boots is the most underrated item in the game I think, especially early in the game. Also, I prefer character classes who use Light Armor rather than heavy armor(even though I had a knight and lancer), because light armor gives more beneficial stat boosts. Heavy armor gives you more HP, but Light Armor gives you things like attack power and abilities to stop certain status effects. And, as far as skills go, I think thatBlade Grasp is by far the most overlooked skill in the game. The evasion boost from it is incredible, you'll basically never be hit by physical attacks again. Everyone knows that things like Hamedo and HP Restore are good, but I thought I'd just throw a shout out to Blade Grasp.
Another thing, I think that after a certain point mages basically become more of a hassle to have in your party. Skills like Punch Art, Item, Draw Out, and Sing really just make them a liability. You can get healing and attacks in much more quickly than you could with a white mage or black mage, respectively. Not to say that they are all bad though, because Summoners are extremely useful, but as far as healing goes I'd say just having someone with Punch Art and a high attack is just as good, and a lot quicker.
This post got a lot longer than I intended.. so /end rant.
