Just got to Gran pulse and missions have become available to me
1) im guessing majority of them are optional correct?
2) if i was to carry on with the main storyline is it possible to return and do the missions later on?
3) any tips on getting easy gil/cp in gran pulse?

1: Yes.
2: Yes
3: Go far north west of the map and you'll find some penguin looking creatures. They give 1300-2500 and are fairly easy. The blue looking penguins are the ones that can summon, so watch out for them if you are to fight them.

You can also go into Mah'habara and fight there which gives you 3-5k. I don't know if you're guys can handle them. You can find Mah'habara by following the to the required destination [ basicly going on with the main story line ].

complete mission 14 and just look for buried treasure, the first one is always a golden nugget


better place to grind for cp, if you've ever seen where the behemoth is fighting that big dog thing, attack them, its ALWAYS pre-emptive, finish the behemoth first, then the big dog 6kcp each time takes like 1 minute per round

You can do Mission 7 and sell bomb cores at 600 a piece. You get 5 bomb cores each time you do the mission.
If you decide to proceed onto the main story line, mission 24 is a great place to get gil. Sell the items you get from completed mission on 24. You have to have beat the boss first before you can re-do Mission 24 because Mission 24 is part of the main story line. Tried not to specify things so I didn't spoil your fun.

but golden nuggets sell for 60k each so yeahh


and dont sell bomb cores, use them for upgrading, their good for upgrades O_O

is there a certain point later in the game where i cant get back to gran pulse?
or can i return here right before the last boss ( or close to)

not sure about the end, BUT i just beat the chap 11 boss and i walked back to grind a bit, so i didnt continue on to chapter 12

if that helps i had to upgrade all my weapons because im cool like that

You can return any time you want to so long as you are near a waypoint transport.

Waypoint Transports are provided from completing a certain mission. They are normally colored black, and you will definitely know that it's a way point mission. Some of them do not activate if you do not do a certain amount of missions.
I did about 9 missions before moving onto the story line and I missed a couple waypoint transports because they were in-active. I did get to a spot though where I can transport back but it took a while. After Chapter 11, you can't go back to Gran Pulse until you complete Chapter 12.
