Actually, you'll find that almost every element of the game is lifted from earlier games; FF9 was intended to be a throwback of sorts and they really went for it, every previous final fantasy has things in FF9.
For example, the entire plot of the game is essentially a direct lift from FF6, with some terminology changed of course and other little details. Zidane = Locke, the Princess = Terra, the queen = Ghestal, Beatrix = Celes, Steiner = Leo, Kuja = Kefka
If you've played all the earlier games then you'll be surprised at what you can catch in the game; bosses lifted from FF1, FF4, and other games.. a summon that was a boss in FF5, names taken from the other games, and even music in some cases (remixed though). It is all very nostalgic and very well done if you are quite familiar with the series, and a very solid game; I think it has the best elements of any of the PS1 games and is better than FF7 and FF8, it is so much more colorful, in more ways than one, it's a shame it wasn't as popular.
Double vouch.
EDIT: To Coco, enjoy it because it's truly a remarkable game, escpecially the first time through.
Currently playing through FFIX myself, near the end of disc three at the moment.
If you need any help with anything, even minor, just hit me up with a PM. I've played through FFIX 7-8 times (go nerd me!).
