I have a token aggro mage deck and a taunt warrior deck

Havnt really played the other classes yet, but I'm liking the warrior a lot

I've heard this game is very much pay to win unless you grind for months, will I eventually hit a wall if I don't "invest" money into this game

There are plenty of cheap and effective decks

You just won't be able to play most Control style decks until you gather up cards/dust because they use a lot more legendaries

But something like face hunter or zoo warlock don't use anything above rare

Ofc you'll hit a wall if your goal is to rank up as a new player.

here's some advice from a casual f2p player:

- aggro decks are quite cheap and help a lot at low ranks.
- most decks contain about 80% classic cards: a solid base is much more valuable than 1 exotic legendary. --> I love the rare (100 dust) card "knife juggler": it's pretty stong in any basic deck that plays with minions, no matter what class you play. The legendary card (1600 dust) "Grommash Hellscream" is pretty stong ofc, but it can only be used in warrior decks - and costs as much as 16 useful rare cards.
- very important: soon (around easter? I guess in about 4 weeks) Blizzard will make some major changes to the play mode: I would not invest in any GvG cards right now.
- also important: I recommend unlocking the first wing of each "old" solo adventure (--> Naxxramas and Blackrock Mountain), because you can't buy it any more after the major patch comes out. You can craft those cards, but investing 700g for a legendary like "Emperor Thaurissan" (BRM 1st wing) is much cheaper than spending 1600 dust later. Having the first wing allows you to unlock the other wings any time later with gold (700g per wing - just like the way it is right now, but you won't be able to use real money to unlock it). Just be sure that you got the first wing of Naxx and BRM.
- reach at least Rank 20 in each season for the card back and the golden common card reward (worth 50 dust if you disenchant it). You can't fall below rank 20 no matter how often you lose, so don't be shy even if you got bad luck and meet 5 or 8 real strong opponents at rank 25 - 20.
- I recommend trying to reach at least rank 15 each month for the better end-of-season reward: a golden rare card (worth 100 dust if you disenchant it). The rewards get slightly better with each rank (better or more cards every 5 ranks; +5 dust for every single rank between the "5 rank steps). Rank 10 is not important; Rank 5 is interesting again (golden epic card).
- you do not need to keep that rank until the end of the month: you can see your highest rank (and the resulting reward chest) on your quest page. Don't get panic if you reach rank 15 and fall back to rank 18 again, you will get a rank 15 reward.
- Don't get frustrated if you meet many strong enemies at low ranks, especially at the beginning of each month. Climbing ranks in the last week is much easier for a casual player than climbing ranks in the first week. Just don't forget to hit rank 20 (or 15).

I also recommend watching these videos; it will cost you about 1 hour, but it help you to understand the basics of heartstone (it's even useful if you got plenty of experience with trading card games in general)

They might be obsolete after the next big patch though.

Not looking to do ranked yet, casuals are fine for now, was just wondering if rank was determined by wallet size

The easiest games you can have are at rank 20. Several people farm rank 20, but casual games are full of people who hit legendary (or very high) ranks and do their quests with expensive decks without consequences if they lose.

Many of those who farm at rank 20 win one game and lose one game (concede even before they pick any cards). So they'll stay at rank 20 with zero stars.

Start playing ranked games and thank me later, especially after getting the rank 20+ reward next tuesday ;)

there is no reason to play unranked unless you're hoping to reach top 100 at the end of the month (which will most likely never happen ^^)

At high rank everyone have most of the good cards/legendaries. So skills do make a difference and You will have a hard time competing with ppl with much better cards
