Hearthstone raked in ~20 mill every month last year.

Plus they finally dropped official mobile apps, so their target audience is bigger than ever.

/e for comparison, dota made ~18 mill a month.

but their dropping the buy option on those completely I think iirc they also stopping gvg pack sales too

Yes. Imo this is not strictly a money play. Anyone who wanted to stay competitively relevant needed to buy the expansions anyway, they are taking away the need to buy all the expansions.

This could encourage more new players to spend money on the one expansion to catch up, thus resulting in more revenue. BUT i believe this is more to put an end to the "p2w" nonsense.

New players will need the full classic set + BRM + TGT + LoE + Gods
