I buy arena here and there and pay $ for expansion. I have boughten few packs to. I believe if you love game you should support it. I can always get everything for free I been playing since alpha and have almost every card. So yeah.

It's really interesting.
I felt like more people spent 50$ for the expansions

Not to pay to win.
Pay to get started though, or a lot of time.
You might not be able to do some decks, but there are lots of competitive decks that have 1 legendary or less.
Some people are just mad that they can't win arena to get cards faster.

Also it's a free game.
You should expect to pay at least $50 for any game you play if you want to be competitive in it.

Pay to win games are ones where the more money you spend you always get more of an advantage.
In Hearthstone you just pay the entrance fee to be competitive and then you never need to spend again.
A game like Archeage you can literally spend $20,000 and not be max gear.

Well, I don't know anyone that has reached rank 5 without spending a penny.
And some games like LoL don't need money involved to get competitive.
But I admit that if you spend enough time playing Hearthstone, you don't need to pay to win games.

Of course if you spend enough time you can eventually catch up.

But in League you would have to play like 20 games every day and it would still take you months to catch up. Being able to adapt to meta champions and using counter picks to win games. Filling other roles in case you don't get yours.

0$ Highest rank: Legendary, first obtained after Nax with a Zoo warlock deck. Got there by practicing the minion position on the board and what spells to trade arround. (Won most mirrors)
You need 1 deck tuned deck that suit the current meta, this dosen't req. any legendary cards, and thus not much grind. How ever more cards will give you more options and help you to learn the game/meta and such.
Getting legendary is a 1 month grind at a learning curve of that current meta. Some people have trained this skill for months.

If you can get anything above 50% win rate, you can go legendary with enough games. People misplay/disconnect or tilt.
Even bots could get legendary (without legendaries), and they had major flaws. (Dunno if true anymore tho)

Yes most legendary players spent money.
Casual players are less likely to spend money.
Deck Matters - but money won't take you to legendary. It enable you to play more deck/classes.
It takes ALOT of money to get all the cards.

Best of Luck, game is worth spending money on but not needed if you manage to grind/do dalies.

Edit:

(Pre Black rock mountain) Estimated 110$ is the average amount people pay.
28% Players still haven't spend a dime.

Damn, that's impressive!
Personally, you are the first one I meet that reached legendary without spending anything.
I didn't spend anything yet and I played for around 3 months.
Although, I don't really play the meta :/
Always trying to find a build I find funny to play.
Actually, I play Divine Shield Paladin.

Haha, I knew some people spent alot! B)
Cuz sometimes I'm against some high-cost decks and wondering how people can afford it haha.
Handlock cost such a shitload!
Even if I unenchanted all my cards, I don't think I would have enough to craft a full one xD.
