You do have to purchase heroes (whether with real money or in-game "splinters"), but Human Torch is one of the starter heroes. To my knowledge once you have a character you have them forever.

If you want you can go through story mode to get a feel for the game but if you're trying to level quickly then go to holo-sim until level 20. From there just do legendary quests until 60 since it is one of the fastest ways to get here AND it gives you a thing called "odinmarks" which you can use to get a legendary weapon or blessings (would recommend the legendary weapon first since you can trade for blessings).

edit: There is a quest that will give you an item to reset skill points.

Good luck! This game is pretty fun and they're continually adding new content so it'll get better as time goes on.

While leveling just pick up any purple items that give you +health (normally slot 3, 4 and 5) just so you don't die all the time. + skills or "Grants X to Skill" is nice as well.

In terms of rarity it goes (afaik):

1. Uniques - Bronze-ish color
2. Cosmics - Yellow
3. Epic - Purple
4. Rare - Blue
5. Uncommon - Green
6. Common - White

At max level after you're decently geared there is pretty much only Raids at the moment. You could do X-Defense or Holo-sim (non-stop waves of monsters) or just farm cosmic terminals as well. They're adding another map called the "Bronx Zoo" later on as well.

there is also PvP but I haven't touched it much.
