1st Tip

Pick Storm or Thing as your starter

personally I would go with Storm.

2nd

Any items/loot you gather (that you don't intend to use), donate to the "Crafter Vendor" to level him up.

3rd

Don't upgrade gems/elements as you will find high level ones alot later on in game.

4th

Expect server downtime and big hairy patches ^_^

I hear running Manhattan Patrol (the purple terminal at the top of Avengers Tower) is the best for leveling but if it's your first time through the game just enjoy the experience that the storyline provides.

Also a tip:
When you click on an enemy and view their hp interface there is a little box on the top rightmost corner of it that is colored.
Grey means that the enemy is far below your level. You wont receive epic or higher loot from them.
Green means that they are your level and they provide you with full experience.
Light orange means they are slightly above your level and will provide you with slightly less than 100% xp (I think its roughly 80-90%) and have slightly increased stats and do more damage
Dark orange means they are above your currently level and defeating them will provide you with a reduced amount of xp (roughly 60-80) and have increased stats and do more damage
Red means that they are far above your level and defeating them will halve the xp provided and will have much higher stats and do a lot more damage

I couldn't locate information regarding the exact numbers. These are estimates. I would stay in the green-light orange range. It's usually the most effective way of gaining experience.
