Is there a way to unlock heroes without paying real money for them? I want wolverine but I don't think it's worth it to buy him with real money lol.

They Drop Off Bosses Only. Very rare without Boosts / Gear.

They can drop off any mob and even chests.

You are wrong. Dev posted on Reddit / Marvel Forums.

Costumes can drop off any mob and even chests, but not Heroes.

Also if you do get a Hero it can only drop once a day.

This is true. Heroes currently only drop off bosses and only the first time you kill them per day.

Costumes and other cash shop items can drop from trash mobs, chests, as well as bosses. Howerver again only first time you kill the boss per day.
