I have the Crimson Crystal.. It's lvl 27 req though. Does that matter?

Crystal of cyttorak is not a visual artifact. You have to equip it to artifact slot to use it.

Just see if you can drop it into the core spot in the crafting section. I don't believe you have to bind it. Crystal doesn't even allow you to drop it there.
