Azure Dreams, for PS1. Low on content, but it dropped your level to 1 every time you re-entered the dungeon, and required that you find a specific item in order to get to leave. The only level/power progress you could make was leveling your familiars (you could only carry 5 items into the tower with you, so your limited on how many of those you bring) and those have a limited amount of magic (magic is used in every action they make, including walking, so they get 'exhausted' really fast) and in finding and powering up a weapon/shield (+1 attack or +1 defense 'sand' items to enhance your equipment.) Oh, and dieing doesnt end the game, it just kicks you into town - without all those hard-won items you'd just gotten. Still quite an addicting game though. Too bad they didnt ever make a sequil (that I know of).
EDIT: This from Wikipedia. "There is a semi-sequel, Tao's Adventure: Curse of the Demon Seal, planned for US release on March 21, 2006" so.. hopefully it'll be decent eh? too bad it doesnt state what platform it'll be on. Time to dig, I guess.
