So many games fall under the umbrella of RPG, here's how I would categorize some of the greatest digital RPGS:
Best Story/Flavor: Planescape Torment (play this game, it will change your life)
Best ARPG: Diablo 2 (I played it yesterday, I played it 11 years ago, I'll play it till D3 comes out and probably longer)
Best Open-World: Fallout New Vegas / Elder Scrolls Oblivion (Bethesda are the true sucessors to the BlackIsle throne, the height of modern CRPGS)
Best JRPG: FF7 (not my favorite style of rpg, but this was the only one that really left an impression)
Best True Roguelike: Angband (all you really need in life is a bootable Linux USB drive with Angband installed)
Best MMORPG: WoW (hard to admit, but it's a genre-defning game, by far the most complex and massive piece of software ever designed for the purpose of gaming)
All that said, the Mecha-Striesand of gaming will be created when Blizzard and Bethesda collaborate on a Planescape-setting MMORPG with a Roguelike/Diablo approach to loot. When the day comes, Gary Gygax will awaken from the grave and shout "Look on my works and anye mighty and despair!", the rivers will run amber with single-malt whisky, and all the evildoers on Earth will participate in a single-elimination breakdance tournament to the death. The winner will then throw themselves into Hawaii's Mount Kilauea volcano, and the Golden Age of Humanity will begin.
This guy seems to know his shit.

Sadly i have played planescape or angband. I will def check them out
