I'd say Heart Gold or black/white would be a good place to start. They're the newer ones, and the games have only gotten a little more complicated, but have gotten much longer.
Duly noted, thanks. The plot's opened up a bit in Wild Arms 1 so I'm starting to get into it, it's not bad. I remember Wild Arms 2 being very well received, I played it as a kid but not for long. I'll probably start up Pokemon Heartgold once I'm done this this.

The only RPG I've been able to tolerate on a smartphone thus far is Dungeon Master (or something similar, Dungeon something) but my iPhone 4 can't really handle it all that well. It's probably more enjoyable on an iPhone 5 or a tablet.
