I'm on 64-bit Windows 7 and kept getting some weird error. Reformatted my PC since then so I can't be fucked with remembering what it was, I just know it wasn't as simple as it should've been. Was able to open the client, download the required updates, then something when wrong before I was able to create a character or whatever.
I only downloaded it once straight from the schtserv site. There are mirrors to the whole game + patch + whatever is needed(been a couple years since I installed it so i can't remember), where you don't have to bother downloading everything separate.
