Seems like too many people to control for it NOT to be turn based.
The game has a pretty neat combat system. You set combat tactics for each of your team members and let the AI do the rest, while you control your main char.
For example you have a mage and you can set 6 different skills/movements in his/her combat slots:
Slot 1:
When ally has low life/ when you have low life

10/25/
50/75% health
Cast heal/ use health potion

This means that when ever an ally has less than 50% life the AI will constantly cast heal. But you could change it to when ever that person has under 25% life she'll use a potion.
Slot 2 Attack enemy

attack strong opponent first / attack weak opponent

use fire spell / use lightning spell..
Etc... you start out with only a few but after a while you can have lots of preset tactics that the AI will follow. Basically your team becomes invincible with 2 mages and good tactics.
